Cinema Review #199: Knock at the Cabin (2023)

Knock at the Cabin is the new film from M Night Shyamalan and stars Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge as a couple on holiday at a cabin the middle of the woods with their daughter when they are disturbed by a group of four people (including Dave Bautista) who claim they must make a terrible choice in order to prevent the apocalypse.

M Night’s track record is not spotless, he’s definitely made some bad ones, but it’s certainly not from lack of ambition. And Knock at the Cabin is certainly an interesting film. I think the performances on the whole were solid, particular shout out to Dave Bautista who was great as always. I think the concept is interesting and for a film thats just over 90 minutes it keeps your attention well.

I think the issues lie in the dialogue which as always with M.Night is just bizarre at times. People phrase things in a way no human being ever would (at times this can be hilarious, like in The Happening), but here it just seems odd, but it certainly is not the worst M Night dialogue ever. I think it just at times feels like its building to something that it never fully realises, which contributes to the film ending up being not that memorable.

So, I would recommend Knock at the Cabin, if you like M Night this is one of his better efforts (better than Old, but no Split), but you could also watch it at home and there wouldn’t be a major difference. But solidly entertaining and not boring for sure. 2.5 Stars.
