Cinema Review #118: Another Round (2021)

Another Round is the lastest film from director Thomas Vinterberg and stars Mads Mikkelsen. It follows a group of teachers who, on the advice of a philosopher, decide to keep their blood alcohol at 0.5% to try and improve their lives. At first, it seems to work and they all seem happier in their personal lives and at work, but things soon start to change.

Another Round won the Oscar for Best International Feature at the last Oscars and Vinterberg was nominated for Best Director. The accolades are definitely deserved. It is an excellent film. Brilliant direction, a great screenplay and wonderful performances from all the central characters and in particular Mikkelsen.

The film has so much to say about alcohol and people’s relationship with alcohol at different times in their lives, something which is rarely explored on screen in this way. It never feels preachy and completely lets the audience decide the take home message, with the ending in particular (which I won’t spoil), being a brilliant talking point and is wonderfully ambiguous.

Another Round is a film I would highly recommend. Easily one of the best films I’ve seen this year. It has had quite a limited cinema release in the UK, but if you can stream it or buy it physically, it is really worth watching. 4.5 Stars.
