Cinema Review #80: Uncut Gems (2020)

Uncut Gems is the new film from the Safdie brothers (Good Time) and stars Adam Sandler as jewellery salesman and diamond dealer Howard Ratner.

The film will be released on Netflix late in the year, but I saw it the cinema and if you can I would highly recommend that experience.

Uncut Gems is a really entertaining experience, but also an anxiety inducing one. It plays out like a car crash in front of your eyes, where you don’t want to look, but you can’t look away. Part of this success is Adam Sandler’s mesmerising central performance, who nails this character who is always almost gets what he wants, but just misses it or makes a bad decision. Sandler is completely believable and helps to create this believable character.

In addition to this, the score is phenomenal, it draws you in and feels as if the film envelops you. There is an amazing visual intro, which starts as one thing and ends as another.

I highly recommend Uncut Gems, the only complaint I have is that it is a little long and there are a few things which could have been explored further, but other than that it is a fantastic film with a great performance from Sandler. 4.5 Stars.
