Cinema Review #71: Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

Jumanji: The Next Level is the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which in turn followed on from the original Jumanji. In this film, the kids are forced to return to the game in order to find their friend, but mistakes ensue when two elderly friends (Danny DeVito and Danny Glover) also enter the game. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black also return as the game characters, the real world characters inhabit.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was one of those films, which took everyone by surprise, no one really had any expectation for it, but actually it was very entertaining and made over $1Billion at the Box Office. As a result, the sequel was inevitable. So, what is it like?

The film, much like the previous one, has lots of humour, the actors strengths are utilised well. It is the sort of film, which could be enjoyed by most of the family and there are certainly worse ways to spend time.

I did feel, however, the film wasn’t as entertaining as the first outing, the jokes about being old people in younger peoples bodies does wear a bit thin. It doesn’t help that quite a few of the funnier jokes were in the trailer. The set-pieces are fine, but not hugely memorable, which could probably be said for the whole film.

Overall, if you enjoyed the previous film, you will likely enjoy this one, it has some fun moments and it is never boring. It just isn’t hugely memorable and I wouldn’t particularly need to see more from this franchise (which will likely depend on the film’s box office takings, which means competing with Star Wars, which will be interesting). So, if you liked the last one, go see it, but if not you could wait and see it on TV in a few Christmases time. 3 Stars.
