Cinema Review #41: Long Shot (2019)

Long Shot is a new comedy film starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron. It follows a journalist (Rogen) who reunites with his babysitter (Theron), who is now Secretary of State, as her speechwriter, but the pair become closer than they anticipated. It is directed by Jonathan Levine and written by Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah. If you can’t help but hear ‘Long Shot’ and not think ‘kick da Bucket’ then you get a gold star, if not don’t worry (google it!).

Firstly, Long Shot is more of a romantic comedy than an out and out comedy. It has elements of political satire and gross-out humour, but is at its core a romantic comedy. As that it works well. Theron and Rogen have good chemistry and are very watchable. The film isn’t laugh out loud funny all the way through, but it has a few laughs and is amusing. There is decent support from the likes of O’Shea Jackson Jr, Bob Odenkirk and Andy Serkis.

Some of the political satire is a little on the nose at times, but it is not too bad and actually the Trump jokes were a lot cleverer, than something like Vice. Long Shot is perfectly entertaining and I would recommend it if you like Seth Rogen’s humour or if you want to see a romantic comedy. 3 Stars.
